Synopsis:

ALVURA reflects on human fragility and resilience in the face of global crises, connecting the themes of Blindness and the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. Both narratives expose how fear and isolation can disrupt society and trigger moral alienation, where the other is seen as a threat and human connections deteriorate. Saramago's "white blindness" symbolizes the loss of not only literal vision, but also the ability to "see" others with empathy – a reflection of how confinement and social distancing during the pandemic have intensified individualism and emotional disconnection. At the same time, the play explores the duality of these crises, which, despite the chaos and loneliness, reveal moments of resistance, solidarity and reflection. As in Essay on the Blindness, the pandemic has brought to light the ability to care, adapt and rebuild collectively, challenging the limits of fear and alienation. The transformation of blindness into lucidity points to a possibility of renewal: crises like these are also opportunities to redefine our relationships and priorities, illuminating paths of empathy and humanity.
